Danijel

Danijel, aged 39, works as a nurse in the Emergency Room.

In envisioning Serbia’s future, Danijel longs for a return to the prosperity of the 1980s.

‘I wish for a country akin to what we had in the ’80s because that era afforded us a comfortable life. We enjoyed the ability to afford many things while still having ample resources for food and clothing for the entire month. Today, the simple act of dining out once a month feels like a luxury, let alone doing so twice.’

The natural beauty of Serbia fills Danijel with pride. ‘Serbia offers us freedom and the embrace of its stunning natural landscapes, a treasure we should cherish. We are blessed with rivers and abundant natural resources, which is a significant aspect of our national identity. I hold deep affection for this country, just as it is. During my childhood, I spent every summer vacation in the village of Brezovac and experienced its unique charm. The quality of air, the ambiance, and the warmth of the people left an indelible mark on me. While times have changed, our natural beauty remains unspoiled, a source of immense delight. Most locales in Serbia are conducive to relaxation and rejuvenation.’

On a less positive note, Danijel laments the depopulation of smaller towns and cities. ‘It deeply troubles me to witness the exodus of residents from smaller places, not just villages but also towns. For instance, there are now 11 nurses and technicians from Krusevac working here at the Emergency Room. The looming question is, who will serve in the Emergency Room in Krusevac or the local hospital? The situation is dire because everyone has gravitated toward larger cities in search of better work conditions. I wish these smaller towns could provide comparable opportunities, alleviating the need for such migrations.’

Danijel proudly identifies as a dreamer, and this outlook helps him navigate the challenges imposed by modern lifestyles.
